More about the liver...

The liver performs at least 500 known functions and is the body's chief detoxification organ. Any toxin that enters the body (whether through something eaten, inhaled or rubbed onto the skin), arrives at the liver for processing.

The liver basically acts as a 'cleaning house', which is able to recognise millions of potentially harmful chemicals and transform them into something harmless or prepare them for elimination. In other words, it is the chemical brain of the body - recycling, regenerating and detoxifying in order to maintain health.

The majority of chemicals entering the body are fat soluble, which means that they can be stored in fatty tissues such as the brain, cell membranes and body fat stores. It is the liver's job to convert these toxins into water-soluble chemicals, so that they may be excreted in watery fluids (such as urine, bile and sweat).

As well as detoxification, the liver also performs a number of other vital functions including:

Carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism: The liver converts glucose into glycogen for storage. When blood sugar levels fall (e.g. between meals or overnight), the glycogen can be re-converted into glucose again to restore these. The liver also produces glucose tolerance factor from chromium and other nutrients. This works with insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Therefore, diabetics wishing to have better control of their blood sugar must ensure a healthy liver. The liver is also where the majority of triglycerides and cholesterol are manufactured - hence your blood levels of these fats are largely dependent on your liver function.

Hormone metabolism: The liver is the major site of hormone breakdown. Hormones, such as oestrogen are secreted into the bile and enter the small intestine for excretion. If the liver is overworked, symptoms of oesterogen dominance such as PMS, menstrual cramps and swollen breasts can result. Inefficient breakdown of male hormones (androgens) may produce symptoms such as acne, scalp hair loss and excessive facial hair in women. If you have a sluggish bowel, you will not excrete these hormones properly - they will be reabsorbed into the intestines, recirculate and lead to higher blood levels.

Digestive functions: The liver manufactures around 600 to 1000mL of bile each day. Bile is necessary for fat digestion, as it breaks down fat globules into smaller molecules so that they may be absorbed. Bile is also the major route for the excretion of a number of substances, including: cholesterol and other fats; bilirubin; fat soluble hormones; and toxins broken down by the liver. Once secreted into the intestines, these substances can be absorbed by fibre from our diet and excreted out in bowel motions. If we do not consume enough fibre, however, toxins and cholesterol can be reaborbed back into our bloodstream.

Storage of vitamins and minerals: Vitamins A, B12, D, E and K are stored in the liver, along with copper and iron. A sufficient volume of these can be stored to last several months. The liver also converts vitamin D into its active form, needed for calcium metabolism.

You can therefore see that the liver is a vital organ - not only for detoxification, but for many other critical biological processes too. However, it has a lot of help from other organs and body systems. None of the detox systems work in isolation - if one is overworked or overburdened, this will place additional stress on others.
